We have had a VERY long 2 days here. First my update on Ryan. He arrived safely back at TCNJ last night about 7pm after a harrowing 32 hour trip from New Orleans. They ran into an ice storm and subsequently slid into a tractor trailer. No on was hurt Thank God but the ice prevented any traffic from moving for another 6 hours. He is very tired, a little stiff but safely back in his dorm today.
Riley had a big set back today. Last night I noticed a baseball size lump on his knee where he had the surgery. I couldn't believe it because it wasn't there 2 hours before that. It was very swollen ,purple and painful to the touch. He had difficulty walking on that leg. I took him to the vet today who looked at his leg and felt that it was a bad infection inside his knee. She did x-rays to see if the wire that was inserted in his knee had moved. She sent those x-rays to the orthopedic surgeon to look at and get her opinion if the wire had moved and was causing the problem. In the meantime she tried to aspirate some of the fluid out but it was a very thick substance so she was ably to get only a small amount out. She is having that cultured to see if it is an infection, what type of bacteria it is. She put him on a strong antibiotic for the next 2 weeks. She didn't want to take out the stitches until she knew what we were dealing with. I have to watch for further swelling and discoloration and ice it 4 x/day for 20 min. We will go back on Thurs for a re-check. I am so upset as Riley had been making great progress. He holds his leg up now as I guess it is very painful. We can't start any kind of therapy for at least a few weeks. Today was extremely disappointing and very upsetting to see Riley in this condition. I know these pictures are a little gross but wanted to show what I was talking about. It is very depressing to see Riley back in pain again. We will work our way through this and I will keep posting the information as I get it.
